Sensors Introduces New Particulate Mass Measurement System for In-Use Testing

SEMTECH® PM2 Combines Real-Time Data with Cumulative Mass Measurements

This past September, Sensors, Inc. announced the launch of the SEMTECH® PM2, an on-board vehicle emissions measurement system that combines real-time and cumulative particulate matter mass measurements. By combining an ion mobility system with a gravimetric method, the system provides the benefits of both instantaneous data and accurate, time resolved mass measurement in a single, compact unit.

The product launch comes on the heels of approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) for use as an alternative method for heavy duty in-use compliance testing applications, as put forth in the US EPA 40 CFR part 1065 subpart J. In order to receive this alternate system approval, Sensors had to prove that the PM2 is "consistently and reliably at least as accurate and repeatable as the specified procedure." Sensors achieved this with a product that offers significant advantages to the end user.

The PM2 consists of the following key elements: a real-time PM transducer which is based on diffusion charging the particles and then measuring the current caused by the charged particles leaving the sensor, and an exhaust sampling/conditioning and gravimetric filter system (47mm standard cassette x 3). The on-board unit uses a single sample probe and heated line for both instantaneous and cumulative particulate mass measurements, thereby simplifying installation. The system measures particle sizes between 23 nanometers and 2.5 micrometers.

The PM2 can be used as a stand-alone device, or can be combined with Sensors' other SEMTECH® products that measure gaseous pollutants.

Sensors to Display PM2 and More at the North American Automotive Testing Expo

Sensors will be at booth 11006 at the Suburban Showcase, Novi, MI on October 24-26th.

Come visit us at booth #11006 at the North American Automotive Testing Expo in Novi, Michigan! See various methods for measuring flow, particulate matter, and gaseous emissions. The all-new PM2 will be on display, along with Continuous Particulate Number (CPN) for particulate measurement solutions. The LDV and flow meter are available for demonstrating gaseous emissions measurements. Talk to our knowledgeable staff, who can help you find the right solution for your emissions testing needs.
